During the funeral rites, we entrust the departed to the merciful love of God, trusting that having completed their earthly journey, and having been purified in soul, they may be welcomed into the fellowship of the saints in heaven. Through the celebration of Holy Mass, we pray for the soul of our loved one. We also pray for one another, that we be granted strength and hope amidst our grief.
Upon the death of a loved one, arrangements are made, whether by means of the funeral home or directly, for family members or survivors to meet with the parish priest or deacon. The purpose of the gathering is to attend to the details of the Funeral Mass. This might include the selection of specific scripture readings, prayers and hymns. In addition, some family members may wish to participate in the Funeral Mass as readers and gift bearers. The family meeting generally takes place at the parish rectory.
Sacred music for the liturgy is coordinated through Lucia Clemente Falco, Director of Music. Arrangements for music are generally made at the time of the family meeting. Music during the Mass must be sacred music, appropriate to the celebration of Mass. Non-religious musical compositions are best reserved for the wake, the burial service at the cemetery or gatherings following the funeral.
Funeral Masses are celebrated for both parishioners and non-parishioners.
The Funeral Mass may be celebrated by the parish priest or by a priest from another parish, at the discretion of the family.
The Funeral Mass may be celebrated in the presence of the body of the deceased or in the presence of cremated remains.
There is a standard fee regarding funerals in the Diocese of Worcester. This is usually coordinated through the funeral director. Under no circumstances is anyone denied funeral rites due to the family’s inability to provide the usual funeral offering.
Our parish uses a booklet entitled, The Rites of Christian Burial to assist in planning the funeral liturgy. The booklet is free and available to anyone upon request. Simply contact the parish office.
